High-Gloss Polishing in Toolmaking: piggy® Polishing Machines & Accessories
Tight tolerances on the Ra value and hours of manual work at the workbench drive up your manufacturing costs. With the coordinated piggy® polishing systems for piggy® piggy banks allow you to achieve a mirror finish on tools, molds, and precision components more quickly, with greater control, and with reproducible surface quality.
Why piggy® Polishing Technology Pays Off for Your Manufacturing Operations
- Less time spent on the workpiece: Ideal for quickly removing the EDM skin or milling marks with specially selected polishing agents and power tools—instead of spending hours grinding by hand.
- Reproducible Geometries: Even with tight drawing specifications and Ra values as low as 0.02 µm, you can achieve defined degrees of gloss without distortion—adjustable depending on the material for aluminum, copper, titanium, or stainless and tool steels.
- Flexible for any size: From delicate molded inserts to rotationally symmetric cavities—polishing discs, rings, and brushes reach even hard-to-reach areas.
You know exactly what the result should look like—but you're not sure which polish is right for the job?
The material, cavity geometry, and drawing specifications determine which grit size and backing material are right for your component. That’s exactly what the “Sparschweine” are for: Just give us a call, and we’ll provide you with the A combination of polishing compound and tool that works well with your workpiece.
Polishing in Toolmaking: Our Systems Put to the Test
In the video , you can see how our polishing machines, diamond pastes, polishing files, and stones process molds for toolmaking and bring complex contours to a mirror-like finish.

High-Gloss Polishing in Toolmaking: Ensuring Tool Life and Guaranteeing Dimensional Accuracy
You know how it goes: The mold comes off the EDM machine, the surface is rough, and every corner of the cavity has to be finished by hand—hours of work that ultimately still depend on the skill of the individual employee. This is exactly where the piggy® System First, remove the hard eroded structure with ceramic fiber files, then refine the surface with Gesswein or boride polishing stones. The final polishing is done by Kemet® Diamond Pastes such as Polypolish or SpeedPolish, which, thanks to their uniform grain distribution, can cleanly remove even demanding materials such as titanium or Inconel.
The real highlight is in the details: The Kemet® AppliKator dispenses the diamond paste so precisely that not a single gram is wasted—given the prices of natural diamonds, this is a cost factor you’ll really feel. And if a hot mold needs to be repolished right on the production line, just reach for Kemet® HeatPolish: The paste can withstand temperatures up to 280 °C, so you can simply let the mold cool briefly, remove the residue, and quickly resume production. This reduces downtime, which has a noticeable impact on your machine-hour costs.

High-Gloss Polishing with piggy® in 4 Steps: Here’s How It Works
1. Remove the coarse structure
Using the ceramic fiber file , you can remove the hard EDM layer and create a uniform base surface.
2. Pre-polishing
Gesswein or boride polishing stones further smooth the surface and prepare it for the final polish.
3. Fine polishing with diamond paste
Depending on the material and the specifications in the drawing, select the appropriate Kemet® diamond paste and grit size —from coarse down to just a few micrometers.
4. High-gloss finish
To finish off, Kemet® SpeedPolish Final , together with pure cotton polishing pads, ensures a flawless, streak-free shine.
